Holy Russian takeover Batman! It’s Elseworlds time, with the DC universe getting a Eastern block makeover. Thanks to Mark Millar, Superman’s birthing pod landing near a collective farm in the Ukraine instead of Kansas. This was one of DC’s event releases in 2003, and worth picking up in paperback if you’ve missed it. Millar had been working on this for years, had re-worked the concept several times. As he freely admits, it is now in many ways a critique of current American foreign policy.
It also managed to turn the DC concept on its head, Luthor is now America’s only hope against the growing global threat of communism, and most of the other DC’s other heavy weights put in an appearance.
Dave Johnson and Kilian Plunkett share pencilling duties, with Johnson’s coming closer to capturing the required Soviet-poster style, but both managing to inject the right amount of action and dynamic movement into the characters.
